For every tradesperson, artisan, and entrepreneur:
A customer once asked, “How much does it cost to make a table?”
I replied, “£1500.”
The customer looked surprised. “That’s expensive for such a small job!”
I asked, “What do you think it should cost?”
He answered confidently, “£800 at most. It seems like a simple task.”
So, I said:
“For £800, you can do it yourself.”
The customer hesitated. “But I don’t know how.”
“For £800, I’ll teach you,” I offered.
“That way, you’ll save £700 and gain the skills for next time.”
He paused, then agreed. “Alright, that sounds fair.”
To get started, I explained:
- You’ll need tools: a table saw, planer, clamps, and more.
“I don’t own those tools,” he admitted.
“Buying all that for one job would be expensive.”
“No problem,” I said. “For £250 more, I’ll rent you my tools.”
“Okay,” he nodded.
I continued:
“I’m available Tuesday to teach you and lend you the tools.”
“But I can’t do Tuesday. I’m only free today.”
“Unfortunately, I have other clients today.”
“Alright,” he sighed. “I’ll need to take Tuesday off work, which will cost me.”
Then, I added:
“You’ll also need to account for nonproductive factors.”
“Nonproductive factors? What’s that?”
“Things like taxes, insurance, fuel, and safety measures.”
The realization dawned on him. “This will cost me even more and waste a lot of time!”
Finally, I explained:
“You’ll need to pick up materials and load the truck. Be here at 6 a.m. sharp to avoid traffic.”
“6 a.m.? Too early for me!”
After a moment of reflection, he said:
“You know what? Just do it. I’ll pay the £1500. If I tried this myself, it wouldn’t be perfect, and it would cost me far more in time and effort.”
The True Cost of Craftsmanship
When you pay for a job – especially a handcrafted one—you’re not just paying for materials. You’re paying for:
- Knowledge and experience;
- Specialized tools;
- Time and precision;
- Professionalism and accountability;
- Safety, taxes, and insurance.
This story reminds us to value the skill, dedication, and sacrifices behind the work. Judging prices without understanding the effort involved undermines the very craftsmanship you’re seeking.
Let’s support our tradespeople, artisans, and entrepreneurs – they’re worth every penny.
