Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) in Hull
Thinking about an air source heat pump? HJZ Plumbing installs and maintains ASHP systems across Hull and East Yorkshire. Air source heat pumps are becoming a popular alternative to traditional heating, and Henry has the plumbing expertise to get your system connected and running properly.
What Is an Air Source Heat Pump?
An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air and uses it to warm your home and provide hot water. Even when it’s cold outside, there’s enough heat in the air for the system to work. It runs on electricity rather than gas, which makes it a lower-carbon option for heating your property.
ASHPs are particularly good for homes that don’t have a gas supply, or for homeowners looking to reduce their energy bills and carbon footprint. They work with underfloor heating, radiators (larger ones work best), and hot water cylinders.
What We Do
HJZ Plumbing handles the plumbing and pipework side of ASHP installations:
- Connecting the heat pump to your heating system including pipework from the outdoor unit to the indoor cylinder and distribution
- Hot water cylinder installation or replacement to work with the heat pump
- Radiator upgrades if your existing radiators are too small for the lower flow temperatures a heat pump produces
- Underfloor heating connections which work particularly well with ASHPs
- System flushing and preparation before the heat pump is commissioned
- Ongoing maintenance of the plumbing side of your ASHP system
For the electrical connection and commissioning of the heat pump unit itself, we work alongside qualified MCS-certified installers. We handle the plumbing, they handle the electrics and refrigerant. This means you get specialists on each part of the job.
Is an ASHP Right for Your Home?
Air source heat pumps work best in homes that are reasonably well insulated. If your house loses heat quickly through thin walls or old windows, the heat pump has to work harder and your running costs go up. Things to consider:
- You need outdoor space for the unit (roughly the size of a large suitcase, mounted on a wall or a ground stand)
- Your home should have decent insulation (cavity wall, loft insulation, double glazing)
- Larger radiators or underfloor heating work better with ASHPs than small standard radiators
- You’ll need a hot water cylinder (combis don’t work with heat pumps)
- Government grants may be available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (up to £7,500 towards the cost)
Our Rates
ASHP installation work is quoted on a job-by-job basis because every property is different. We’ll come out for an assessment visit (£85, deducted from the final bill if you go ahead) to look at your current heating setup and advise on what plumbing work is needed.
For smaller ASHP-related plumbing work (radiator upgrades, cylinder swaps, system flushing), our standard rates apply:
- Weekday (8am to 5pm): From £178 + parts
- Evening (5pm to 10pm): £267/hr + parts
- Weekend and Bank Holiday: £287/hr + parts
Areas We Cover
We install and maintain ASHP plumbing across Hull, Beverley, Cottingham, Hessle, Anlaby, Brough, and the surrounding East Yorkshire area.
Common Questions
Do you need to be Gas Safe to install an air source heat pump?
No. Air source heat pumps don’t use gas, so Gas Safe registration isn’t required for the plumbing work. The outdoor unit runs on electricity and uses refrigerant, which is handled by the MCS-certified installer we work with. The pipework, radiators, cylinder, and heating connections are all standard plumbing work that Henry handles.
Can I get a grant for an air source heat pump?
Possibly. The government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers up to £7,500 towards the cost of an air source heat pump for eligible homes in England and Wales. The MCS-certified installer we work with can help you check eligibility and apply.
Will my existing radiators work with a heat pump?
They might, but heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures than gas boilers, so smaller radiators may not heat your rooms as well. We’ll assess your existing radiators during the site visit and let you know if any need upgrading to larger ones. Underfloor heating is ideal if you have it.
