What is The Green Homes Grant and How Can It Help You?

The Green Homes Grant was a groundbreaking government initiative aimed at helping homeowners make energy-efficient improvements to their properties. By offering financial support in the form of vouchers, the scheme encouraged households to adopt sustainable solutions while reducing their energy costs.

Under this scheme, the government covered up to two-thirds of the cost of eligible improvements, up to a maximum value of £5,000 per household. For low-income families, grants of up to £10,000 were available, covering 100% of the costs. The program was part of a £2 billion plan to cut carbon emissions and promote eco-friendly living.

What Did the Green Homes Grant Cover?

The grant supported various energy-efficient measures split into two categories: Primary Measures and Secondary Measures.

Primary Measures

To qualify, applicants needed to install at least one primary measure, which included:

  • Insulation: Solid wall, cavity wall, underfloor, loft, roof, or park home insulation;
  • Low Carbon Heating: Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP), Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP), solar thermal systems, or biomass boilers.

Secondary Measures

Once a primary measure was installed, the voucher could also be used for:

  • Draught proofing;
  • Double or triple glazing (replacing single-glazed windows);
  • External energy-efficient doors;
  • Smart heating controls and thermostats.

The value of secondary measures could not exceed the amount allocated to the primary improvements.

How Did the Grant Work?

The application process was straightforward:

  1. Homeowners submitted an online application detailing the desired improvements.
  2. Vouchers were issued for approved projects.
  3. Installations had to be completed by government-approved contractors.

Low-income households benefited further, with vouchers covering the total cost of approved works up to £10,000.

Who Was Eligible for the Green Homes Grant?

The scheme was open to homeowners and landlords in England, with a few restrictions:

  • New-build properties were ineligible;
  • Applicants could not combine this grant with other local authority-funded schemes.

Why Energy Efficiency Matters?

Energy-efficient homes are more comfortable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective to maintain. By adopting solutions like insulation or heat pumps, families could save an average of £200 annually on energy bills while contributing to a greener planet.
