If a pipe bursts or a fitting starts spraying water, the first thing you need to do is turn off the stopcock. It sounds simple, but we get calls every week from people in Hull who either can’t find theirs or can’t turn it.
Knowing where your stopcock is before you have an emergency could save you thousands in water damage.
What Is a Stopcock?
Your stopcock (also called a stop valve) is the tap that controls the mains water supply coming into your house. Turn it clockwise and it shuts off all the cold water to your property. It looks like a small brass or chrome tap, usually with a round or oval handle.
Where to Find It
In most Hull homes, the stopcock is in one of these places:
- Under the kitchen sink on the pipe coming up from the floor. This is the most common location.
- In a downstairs cupboard near the front of the house, close to where the mains pipe enters.
- Under the stairs in older terraced houses.
- In the garage or utility room in newer builds.
If you live in a flat, it might be in a communal cupboard on the landing. Check with your landlord or management company if you’re not sure.
How to Turn It Off
- Find the stopcock (do this now, not during a flood).
- Turn the handle clockwise (righty tighty). It should take a few full turns.
- Open a cold tap downstairs to drain any remaining water from the pipes.
- The flow should stop within a minute or two.
What If It Won’t Turn?
Stopcocks that haven’t been used in years often seize up. Don’t force it with pliers or a wrench as you can snap the valve. Try a few drops of WD-40 around the spindle and leave it for 10 minutes, then try again gently.
If it still won’t budge, call 07450 332 474. We can replace a seized stopcock, usually in under an hour.
The Outside Stopcock
There’s also a stopcock outside your property, usually under a small metal or plastic cover in the pavement near your front boundary. This is owned by your water company (Yorkshire Water in Hull). You can use it in an emergency, but you’ll need a stopcock key (about £5 from any hardware shop).
One Thing to Do Today
Go and find your stopcock right now. Turn it off and on again to make sure it works. Tell everyone in the house where it is. If a pipe ever bursts at 2am, you’ll be glad you did.
