When Should You Replace vs Repair a Tap?

A dripping tap is one of the most common calls we get. The question most people ask is: can it be repaired, or does the whole tap need replacing? Here’s how we decide.

When a Tap Can Be Repaired

Most dripping taps can be fixed by replacing the internal parts. This is quicker and cheaper than fitting a new tap.

Repair makes sense when:

  • The tap is dripping from the spout (usually a worn washer or ceramic disc)
  • Water is leaking from around the base of the handle (the O-ring needs replacing)
  • The tap is less than 10 years old and in decent condition
  • You like the tap and don’t want to change the look of your kitchen or bathroom
  • Spare parts are still available for the model

A washer or cartridge replacement typically takes 20 to 30 minutes.

When It’s Better to Replace

Replacement makes more sense when:

  • The tap body is corroded, pitted, or cracked
  • It’s an old imperial-size tap and modern parts don’t fit
  • You’ve had it repaired more than once already
  • The internal mechanism is worn beyond repair
  • You’re renovating and want an updated look
  • The tap is so old that finding parts costs more than a new one

What About Mixer Taps?

Mixer taps (single lever or dual handle) use cartridges rather than washers. These can usually be replaced, but the cartridge must match the exact make and model. If it’s a budget tap from a few years ago, sometimes the cartridge costs nearly as much as a new tap.

How Much Does It Cost?

Both tap repair and replacement fall under our standard rates:

  • Working hours (8am to 5pm weekday): from £178 + parts
  • The tap itself (if replacing): typically £30 to £150 depending on style
  • A washer or cartridge: £5 to £25

We carry common washers, O-rings, and cartridges in the van, so most repairs are done in one visit.

Not Sure Which You Need?
